An online skin lesion assessment is a phone consultation supported by the lesion’s photos and reports you may provide upon request. It’s well suited to talking through a spot that’s caught your attention, reviewing histology results, planning ongoing surveillance and deciding what needs to happen next. What it can’t do is replace a hands-on examination. Dermoscopy, full-body skin checks and the feel of a lesion under a doctor’s fingers all need an in-person appointment, and if that’s what your skin needs, the doctor will tell you plainly.

No, a telehealth mole check can't replace a physical skin examination. It's a starting point and a triage tool, and dermoscopy and full-body skin examinations still need an in-person appointment.
A skin check should be done in person when a lesion is changing quickly, bleeding or itching, when you're overdue for a full-skin examination, or when you carry high risk factors. When in doubt, book the consult and let the doctor make that call with you.
Online skin cancer advice may be suitable for patients in Australia with a non-emergency skin concern and access to a telephone. Some lesion or skin cancer conditions require a physical examination, testing or urgent in-person care, and the doctor will determine whether telehealth is clinically suitable.
The limitations of a telehealth skin lesion triage consultation are physical: the doctor can't feel the lesion, examine it under dermoscopy or check the rest of your skin, and photo quality places real limits on what can be assessed. Some lesions need biopsy or excision regardless of how they look in a photo.
Monitoring a changing mole using telehealth alone isn't recommended, because a changing mole warrants prompt hands-on assessment. What a phone consultation can do is get you triaged quickly, arrange the right referral and make sure the change is taken seriously from day one.
A telehealth skin cancer consultation can be a starting point to identify concerning features of early melanoma and fast-track you to biopsy or specialist care, which is where diagnosis happens. However, telehealth has limitations as the doctor relies on photos and your medical history, which may not be enough to detect or rule out early melanoma.
If a lesion appears concerning, the doctor will recommend the appropriate next step. This may include an in-person examination, dermoscopy, biopsy, excision or referral to a dermatologist or another suitable practitioner.
